Raphael Wallfisch (Cello)

Raphael Wallfisch is an international cellist and a professor of cello. He has played at many festivals and with famous orchestras all around the world. John York is an outstanding accompanist for Raphael Wallfisch. Critics have praised this perfect partnership.

Concert No 2

Cropper, Welsh, Roscoe Piano Trio

Martin Roscoe’s mastery of the keyboard has been popular at the Music Society for nearly 30 years in solo performances as well as accompanying such stars as Tasmin Little, and Emma Johnson. Peter Cropper founded the internationally acclaimed Lindsay String Quartet and led them for over 30 years. Moray Welsh is joint principal cellist of the London Symphony Orchestra, has directed his own string sextet - The Arienski Ensemble - and for 18 years held a teaching post at the Royal Northern College of Music. In recent years they have become a much-acclaimed piano trio.

Sir Mark Elder was appointed music director of the Hallé Orchestra in 2000 and is an enthusiastic Vice President of this society. In his first concert for us he is joined by opera soprano, Janis Kelly who has recently performed a major role at Covent Garden, the assistant conductor of the Hallé, Andrew Gourlay and several of the principals from the Orchestra.

Royal String Quartet with
Alessandro Taverna (Piano)


We welcome back the Royal String Quartet from Poland, winners of many international competitions who performed for us in 2008. They are joined by Alessandro Taverna who was awarded the third prize at the 2009 Leeds International Piano Competition.

Haffner Wind Quintet

Haffner Wind Quintet

The Haffner Wind Quintet is one of Britain's leading chamber ensembles. Each member of the ensemble is also a soloist as well as being a principal player in the Britten Sinfonia; all are experienced teachers in the UK and abroad.

Manchester Sinfonia
Directed by Richard Howarth

Supported by HCMS Members’ Donations

Richard Howarth has performed for Holmes Chapel Music Society with groups of talented players for more than 15 years originally as the Manchester Camerata Ensemble and since 2007 as the Manchester Chamber Ensemble. To conclude this 40th Anniversary Season Richard has brought together twelve fine string players to give us the opportunity to hear a string orchestra.
